About Us
Nearly seven decades of worship, service, leadership, and community in Brooklyn.
Our Story
Unity Temple Church of God in Christ began in April 1957 as a storefront church founded by the late Bishop Clarence L. Harmon. What began in a modest space grew into a lasting place of worship and community. Bishop Harmon later moved the church to its home at 623 Madison Street in Brooklyn, New York.
Following Bishop Harmon’s passing, Pastor Melvin C. Cooper, a son of the church, became Unity Temple’s second pastor. He served faithfully for many years, guiding the congregation through renovations and innovation while carrying its ministry forward. Pastor Cooper passed away in 2021.
Elder Bryan E. Harris began serving as interim pastor in 2021 and was officially installed as Unity Temple’s third pastor that September.
As we approach 70 years of ministry, we give thanks for the legacy of our three pastors and for the many leaders, musicians, and families whose lives have been shaped by Unity Temple. Our church has long been a staple of the Brooklyn community. We are grateful for the past, blessed in the present, and excited for all that God has yet to do.
